Private, Christopher Helland
Lasse
Magicon chief of Security
Who are you?
My name is Lasse, I’m 36 years old and I work with emergency railroad maintenance.
Which crew do you belong to?
I am the chief of the security crew, and I’ve been a part of the Magicon crew for almost 4 years.
What is your best Magicon memory?
All of the international llama days (we celebrate those in Magicon), where the crew comes together to hang out and enjoy great food.
What is your favorite thing about being in the Magicon crew?
Meeting new people is great, but also the feeling I get after we have opened the main entrance, people have come inside and Magicon can finally begin – and do its magic!
Why should other people join the Magicon crew?
I think it’s a great way to build a community. It’s also a great way to give back and contribute. People should consider what they want to do as a volunteer, and contribute with. You may be a project manager, but if you want to try something else – you should!
Have you learned anything or evolved a skill during your time as a Magicon volunteer?
I’ve learned how to work in google workspace, and use spreadsheets. I have also improved my management and planning skills.
Firuza
Magicon chief of Event
Who are you?
My name is Firuza, I’m 34 years old and besides magicon work and go to school *dead emoji* *laugh emoji*
Which crew do you belong to?
I’m the chief of the Event crew at Magicon Unchained, and this is my second year being part of the Magicon crew.
What is your best Magicon memory?
The audience reaction to whatever happens on the stage, it is especially cool when working backstage, as you can’t see what’s going on there, but you can literally feel the screams and excitement of the audience. It’s so emotional!
What is your favorite thing about being in the Magicon crew?
Being part of the dedicated, cool, talented, giving group of people is the biggest thing for me! Also, I never thought I could work with so many creative things – from planning out the program schedule to helping rig the stage for the cover band performance. But that is what is cool about Magicon – you can experience all these things and see how your ideas get brought to life.
Why should other people join the Magicon crew?
It’s a very rewarding and interesting experience to volunteer at Magicon. It’s not just an organisation, it is a friend group that dreams together and makes these dreams come true. Also you can learn from your colleagues here from various industries – from healthcare to IT – you name them!
Have you learned anything or evolved a skill during your time as a Magicon volunteer?
I have learned so many new things about the entertainment industry! I also really want to take the first aid certification that Sunniva trains us for.
Sunniva
FeelGood Crew
Who are you?
I’m Sunniva, I’m 35 years old and I’m a nurse.
What’s your crew?
I’ve been part of Magicon from the very beginning. I was in the Event crew for 2 years and in the FeelGood crew for 2 years.
What’s your best Magicon memory?
The feeling of opening our first Magicon and seeing so many cool nerds gathered in one place. It was especially amazing to see people come together again after COVID.
What’s your favorite thing about being in the Magicon crew?
The people! Getting to know amazing people better, making new friends, and building connections.
Why should other people join the Magicon crew?
You get to be part of creating an incredible event that hopefully means just as much to the people who visit Magicon as it does to those of us who make it happen. We’re all just nerds who love cool things and events made for nerds!
Have you learned anything or evolved a skill?
I’ve learned how to be more structured and not just a full-blown chaos goblin all the time.
Lise
Magicon’s Co-producer
Who are you?
My name is Lise/Frostylva, I’m 35 years old (I was born in the decade of neon, synth, and arcades, yo!) and I live in Oslo. Background-wise, I have a PhD in molecular biology, but I currently work as a senior coordinator in the university sector.
Which crew do you belong to?
All of them? None of them? Depends how you view it — I’m Magicon’s Co-producer, sharing producer duties with Chris, and I’m also a member of the Board. This means I have an overarching responsibility for the crews as a whole. I’ve been part of Magicon since the very beginning — I was headhunted as Chief of Event in March 2021, and also became a member of the Board a few months later.
What is your best Magicon memory?
I could come up with a bunch of highlights from the nearly four years I’ve been doing this, but seeing the first Magicon becoming reality — and not just that, a huge success as well — was a very special feeling.
What is your favorite thing about being in the Magicon crew?
To me, the number one appeal is being able to create something new and unique. Through Magicon, I can be part of building something that hasn’t been done in the Norwegian cosplay community before.
Why should other people join the Magicon crew?
Magicon keeps its crew involved throughout the entirety of the organization process, which means you get to directly influence different aspects of the con. It’s also a great way to get to know new people and gain actual, useful experience. Also. We got llamas.
Have you learned anything or evolved a skill during your time as a Magicon volunteer?
I come from a background where I already had to master a variety of administrative and project-based tasks, but working with this in a volunteer setting was definitely a boot-camp-like experience — in a good way! I’ve also gotten to know lots of new people, and I love to see the “inner workings” of the communities we work with at Magicon.
Jan Tore
Co-Chief of Security
Who are you?
My name is Jan Tore, I’m 39 years old and work as an application engineer in the pharmaceutical industry.
Which crew do you belong to?
I’m co-chief of security. I’ve been volunteering for three years and had the role as co-chief for 1.5 years.
What is your best Magicon memory?
My best memory is when the crew comes together and I get to have a good time with the new people I’ve met.
What is your favorite thing about being in the Magicon crew?
My favorite thing is getting to know new people, seeing them evolve and learn, and also learning new things myself. I’ve gotten better at planning and organizing too.
Why should other people join the Magicon crew?
It’s very interesting and rewarding to do volunteer work, being able to give back to the community and make it grow. I think it’s important for people to know that they have skills that could be useful to a convention — they could make an impact and improve themselves at the same time.
Have you learned anything or evolved a skill during your time as a Magicon volunteer?
I’ve definitely learned a bunch of new skills — project management, people management, working with others, planning, and seeing the bigger picture. I’ve also made a bunch of new friends!
Michael
Sponsor Manager
Who are you?
My name is Michael Solberg, and I’m 35 years old. I studied to become a graphic designer, but I changed course and ended up as a salesman. I’ve been doing that since I was 17 years old. I recently started working at a global IT company.
Which crew do you belong to?
I’m the Chief of Feelgood! I’ve been a part of the gang for 2 years now, so Magicon Unchained will be my 3rd time!
What is your best Magicon memory?
My favorite memory is coming home from the con thinking — “we did good.” All the steps, stress, and planning all came together to make an amazing con for everyone.
What is your favorite thing about being in the Magicon crew?
There’s lots of good things about being in Magicon. What I appreciate the most, however, is the experience of running a con and all the applicable skills you learn while being a crew member here. It’s not a shallow con or leadership — you do indeed level up here, which can be used in the real world.
Why should other people join the Magicon crew?
It’s super fun — I can recommend it for anyone and everyone. Personally, I’ve never done cosplay and have no plans to, but being in the crew and doing my best to make the con as fun as possible for everyone is definitely a positive life experience.
Have you learned anything or evolved a skill during your time as a Magicon volunteer?
We have a great deal of educated, smart, certified, and cool people in the crew. It’s almost hard to not learn anything while being here. Personally, I’ve learned a great deal about project (and people) management, and I’ve been able to further hone other skills like photography. I’ve also made a ton of new friends!
